Indonesia is a fantastic country!

How many islands make up this country? Take a guess.

Try, 13,000. While many of these are only "islands" depending on the tide, people live on about 8,000 of them. There are more than 350 distinct ethnic groups and many hundreds of languages and dialects are spoken throughout the archipelago. Indonesia is the 4th or 5th largest country in the world and as a country, it has the 4th largest population. There are more muslims in Indonesia than any other country in the world.

We need to acknowledge Indonesia and learn more about this diverse country and its diverse peoples. In the summer of 2000, I set out to do just this. This site has photographs and stories that reflect my experiences while traveling in just a tiny part of this massive archipelago.
